Secret Gardens

"At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, then they begin to hope it can be done, then they see it can be done--then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago."

"The truth is that when one is still a child-or even if one is grown up- and has been well fed, and has slept long and softly and warm; when one has gone to sleep in the midst of a fairy story, and has wakened to find it real, one cannot be unhappy or even look as if one were; and one could not, if one tried, keep a glow of joy out of one's eyes."

"As long as you have a garden you have a future and as long as you have a future you are alive."

"However many years she lived, Mary always felt that she should never forget that first morning when her garden began to grow'."

"Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"...
"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine..."
Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Secret Garden)

"As she came closer to him she noticed that there was a clean fresh scent of heather and grass and leaves about him, almost as if he were made of them. She liked it very much and when she looked into his funny face with the red cheeks and round blue eyes she forgot that she had felt shy."

"And the secret garden bloomed and bloomed and every morning revealed new miracles."

"Where you tend a rose my lad, a thistle cannot grow."

"Whatever comes," she said, "cannot alter one thing. If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it."
Frances Hodgson Burnett (A Little Princess)

"Nothing in the world is quite as adorably lovely as a robin when he shows off and they are nearly always doing it."

"If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden."

"There's naught as nice as th' smell o' good clean earth, except th' smell o' fresh growin' things when th' rain falls on 'em."

"If nature has made you for a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that--warm things, kind things, sweet things--help and comfort and laughter--and sometimes gay, kind laughter is the best help of all."

"She made herself stronger by fighting with the wind."

"Somehow, something always happens just before things get to the very worst. It is as if Magic did it. If I could only just remember that always. The worse thing never quite comes."

La Crème du Ciel ou Peut-être Une Touche de Laiteux Vert

Ah, the cream of the sky or perhaps a touch of milky green. I am currently deciding on the colors of my kitchen. I am at least certain of three possible directions, leaning ever so slightly toward the palest of yellows.

This is the perfect yellow. And I would love to incorporate the mint green as found on the wonderful linoleum tiles above. I never thought I would hear myself say "wonderful" and "linoleum" in the same sentence.

I must find a way to do both. I love this combo.

With only the butter yellow and no hint of green or blue, it lends a very peaceful, constant feel.

The more I look at this color, the more I think buttery yellow is where I am supposed to be.

This is fun, gorgeous, a visual parade of happiness.

Ultimately I do want to have blue with my butter. And these two hues are exactly up my alley, errr, kitchen.

Mmmmmmmmm, makes me want to cook and bake with butter slathered over the walls!

Butter anyone?

This really is a pretty tone. But ultimately, would I miss butter? I eat so little of it, it seems a shame to not have the temptation constantly around. I don't need to be stimulated by the color of veggies, I get enough already!

This is oh so cute though, I must say. It's not out yet.

And then there is just the thought of white, with the colors all around. Hmmmmm.

This is the green I could do. This is exactly the green if I am to go green.

Ahhhh, but then the butter melts me!

So Tuft

I have been fantasizing about a tufted headboard for years now. And this year I'm finally going to make it happen. My vision, though, I don't know if I will make it to the standard I have in my head, is very close to this. Since I will be making it, I plan on using burlap. I'd love the buttons to be large cream velvet. If I can make a border such as the one here, it will definitely be made with the same cream velvet as the buttons.

That's what I'm talkin' about!

This is lovely. So easy to make.

I figured that headboards couldn't be all that hard. I see it all the time, over and over, on HGTV and DIY, so why not? I looked up burlap tufted headboard, and, of course, found dozens of people who have posted ever little thing one needs in order to make it after accomplishing it themselves!

I will want mine a bit more plush, but that's just taste preference and easy to make happen. Here is the recipe for this beauty.

And another

West Elm. This one is ideal to me. Just needs larger cream velvet buttons.

I love Brooke's style. She and her husband got it down together!

Perfection.

Well, then, so can I...plus she has a Lakeland Terrier, what I want to have when we are ready to add a dog to the family!

The Best Time of Year

I really am a primitive lover. I can't believe how deeply I have fallen for the old country, primitive shaker style.

So homemade feeling.

Spacious and simple.

UH! Let me count the ways!

Again, this room will stand as my inspiration for as long as I have a living room with mustard colored walls.
